LIRIK LAGU

Ku petik gitar
untuk cinta kita
hanya untukmu kasih
dan tiada dua..
hanya kau dihatiku
daku mencintaimu
kembalilah pada diriku...

dan di saat indah yang tercipta
kau pergi meninggalkanku
ku terasa tersiksa
kerana dirimu
kembalilah pada diriku...

ku masih tunggu cinta sucimu
yang gapai dibalik awan
please don't ever break my heart
just keep it all inside
appear in my life
it's gonna be alright

bukan ku kaku terdiam
dan membisu
cuma tak diberi peluang untuk bertutur
kasih sambut cintaku
jangan biar jauh
and oh my love my life is just for you

and if my dear
you hear my voice
i'm singing to you this song
let it build our night
coz  i'm the mr. right

Contextual Teaching

Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock (2001) have identified 9 research practices that improve student performance:

1. Identifying similarities & differences

2. Summarizing & note taking

3. Reinforcing effort & providing recognition

4. Homework & practice

5. Questions, cues & advance organizers

6. Non linguistic representation

7. Cooperative learning

8. Setting objectives & providing feedbacks

9. Generating & testing hypotheses.

Actually in Technical School like DAGANG, the most effective Teaching Strategy is CONTEXTUAL TEACHING!

Contextual teaching presents information in familiar contexts and in contexts in which the information is useful. Please answer 2 Questions before Teacher start teaching a lesson:

1. Why the students have to learn the lesson/the concepts?

2. What is it GOOD for? (How useful is the lesson/the concepts to students?)

Learning occurs BEST when learners process new information/knowledge in such a way that it makes SENSE to them in their OWN FRAMES of REFERENCE!

Physics Alive...

The Best Way to learn Physics is to CONNECT the Physics Concepts with the Real Life..Here are the examples:

1. The human ear is an incredibly sensitive instrument, able to detect sounds so faint that they move the eardrum only a microscopic distance (about 10^-11m; 0.1 Angstrom).

2. The human eye is similar to a camera in terms od optical bahaviour. The retina plays the same role as the film in a camera. The rods and cones in the retina act like an arry of miniature photocells. A typical human eye contains about 1.3x10^8 rods and 7x10^6 cones (sensitive to differences in color). Do you know that the rods can detect up to light intensity of single photon?

3.When a beam of white light shines on the reflective side of a CD, what do you see? Can you relate this phenomena to what you see on the beautiful living butterflies? What happens if the butterfly die? Can you see the beautiful color spectra anymore?

Reading in the holidays-The Most Beautiful....

Bought many books but hardly have time to read. Enjoy the precious time in the holidays by reading:

1. Poems: If you shed tears when you miss the sun, you also miss the stars...

2.Speeches: Duty, Honor, Country-Those 3 hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be..

3. Souls: Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds,. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds..

4. Family: Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts...

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living...

Please consult the School Librarians(PSS) I left a copy of the Book and the VCD there....

Magic 7

Physics deal with numbers and the most magical number is 7! I'm sure you know that there are 7 colors in the rainbow (ROYGBIV) and the longest wavelength is 7x10^-7m or 700nm for red light. There are 7 base quantities: Length, Mass, Time, Electrical Current, Temperature, Light Intensities, Amount of Substance-last 2 NOT in SPM Syllabus. There are also 7 types of Logical Gates-AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR-again the last 2 NOT in SPM Syllabus. There are 7 days a week, 7 oceans in the Earth, 7 'holes' on our face (In Mandarin, when someone very angry, we say 'smokes from 7 holes') and James Bond secret code is 007! Do you know the 7 WONDERS of human being? To see, To hear, To touch, To taste, To feel, To laugh and most important TO LOVE!

MKRAs

Last Friday (21/8) attended Perhimpunan BPTV at Putrajaya. We were briefed on Minister Key Results Areas: 1. Membina Negara Bangsa 2. Membangunkan Modal Insan (Pra-Sekolah, 3M, Penyertaan Vok & Kemahiran) 3. Memperkasakan SK 4. Merapatkan Jurang (Semua Sekolah mendapat bekalan elektrik 24j) 5. Memartabatkan Profesion Keguruan (Bai'ah untuk Pengetua/G 6. Meloncatkan Kecemerlangan Institusi Pendidikan (100 Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi) We must brainstorm 2, 5 and 6 ASAP!

NKRAs

Last week attended an interview at Putrajaya. The Panelists asked me to elaborate 3/6 NKRAs: Do you know the answers?

National Key Results Areas are the national goals/problems to be solved by our Government and the results will be judged by the Rakyat:

1. Jenayah 2. Rasuah 3. Infrastruktur Pedalaman 4. Pendidikan 5. Miskin Tegar 6. Pengangkutan.

Under Pendidikan: 4 Specific Goals: i. Pra-Sekolah ii. 3M iii. Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi iv. Bai'ah untuk Pengetua/Guru Besar. So our roles is in iii and iv. Are we ready?

Mohon Restu Cikgu, Mohon Restu Ibubapa, Maafkan diri sendiri

Sila dengarlah nasihat Cikgu Chia: The BEST way to release tensions is to solve the problems that cause the tensions! Jika anak-anak rasa tak bersedia dengan SPM, jumpalah Cikgu, rajin tanya! Cepat-cepat ulangkaji. JIka terlibat kes disiplin, proses penyiasatan, pembicaraan, jatuh hukuman.... semua ini banyak membuang masa dan MEMBAZIR tenaga Cikgu. Sehingga sekarang tak sempat ajar Physics lagi kerana hampir hari-hari ada kes disiplin dan terlalu banyak gangguan... Seya seru anak-anak sekalian insaf dan sedar; 3 kunci saya bagi anak-anak menjelang musim peperiksaan ni: 1. Mohon Restu Guru-Guru yang mengajar anda 2. Mohon RESTU ibubapa. 3. Maafkan diri-sendiri. Yang lepas dah jadi sejarah, bukan? Please START a NEW LIFE today! Winter is OVER; please SPRING into ACTIONS!

A letter from Class Monitor

Saya berasa perubahan ketara ialah apabila saya melihat sekeliling saya tahu" it relates to Physics!" Learn with your experience is the BEST TEACHER! Sincerely, 5T1 Monitor

A letter that made me CRY....

Kepada Guruku yang dicintai...

Guruku, dirimu umpama lilin yang sanggup membakar diri siang dan malam demi menerangi orang lain. Kehadiranmu umpama matahari menyinari pagi. We love U 4ever!

3 Rangkap Pantun-Hadiah dari Murid Saya

Pergi ke pasar membeli siakap,

Siakap dibeli dibawa balik;

Menjadi pelita di kala gelap,

Itulah Mr Chia seorang pendidik.

Pergi berjalan di tengah kota,

Masuk ke kedai membeli gelang;

Naik pangkat gembira tak terkata,

Iaitu Mr Chia Pengetua Cemerlang.

Sebelum saya mengundur diri,

Izinkan saya memohon ampun;

Jika ada perkataan terkena di hati,

Harap kesalahan dapat diampun.

Terima Kasih banyak-banyak anak-anak yang saya rindui, belajarlah bersungguh-sungguh. Tawaran RM 500/= A1 Physics masih SAH, tahu?

Isaac Newton

Another name I always talk about is Issac Newton. He was the 17th century prodigy, riding on the shoulders of giants (Aristotle, Coperniscus, Kepler, Descartes, Galileo etc) and correcting the giants where they were WRONG! His main ideas of Universal Gravitation and the Laws of Motion was accomplished at the age of 23-24 when The Cambridge University was shut down due to the Great Plague. Boys and Girls what are you doing when the school closed due to Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic?

Albert Einstein

As you may notice, as a Physics Teacher, I always talk about Albert Einstein-Person of the Century because his work touched the most important fields of technology: nuclear weapons, televisions, space travel, semiconductors and LASER. Many people blame the atomic bomb that exploded over Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Einstein because he discovered the relationship between mass and energy: E=mc^2. Can we blame Newton for the discovery of Gravity that causes airplanes to crash? When the Nazis came to power in Germany 1933, they started a campaign against Einstein. When told of publication of a book "100 Authors Against Einstein", he replied; Why 100? If I'm wrong, 1 is enough!

TIPS for PTK

Teachers at DAGANG must be very busy marking test papers and trying hard to prepare the coming PTK Exam. Here are some TIPs for you:

1. Try to distinguish between: Nilai, Norma dan Etika Profesion as School Teachers

2. Do you know differences in: Pendekatan dan Kaedah Pengajaran?

3. Please read and study ALL the documents in BUKU REKOD MENGAJAR.

4. Do you know the differences in: Harta Modal, Inventori dan Stok?

5. Do you know the different approaches in handling discipline cases of students: Educative, Preventive, Corrective and Curative measures?

The keys to PTK are APPLICATION, JOB-Based and Workplace. BEST of LUCK Warga DAGANG, YOU CAN DO IT!

Attending Wacana Pengetua Lestari Johor

Since Monday 10/8 I am very pleased and honoured to meet up with many new friends-Pengetua Cemerlang of Johore at a Hotel in B Pahat. I learnt and picked up a lot of new ideas, listen to inspiring and motivating speeches & sharing.... I am looking forward to coming back to share with our DAGANG Team as soon as possible. To Cikgu Kamari and our Aquarium Team, well done! Tahniah dan SYABAS! CHEERS!

Stand Taller, Look Further, Think Deeper

This slogan is modify version of famous Issac Newton: To stand on the shoulders of Giants.... I remember this slogan also use in The CS Wu Science Camp in Taiwan. Reading and life long learning attitudes are the keys to PTK; not the promotion and anjakan gaji! I hope the spirit of sharing good knowledge, the best practices, new creative and innovative ideas especially through our School Website will be benefited by ALL. CHEERS!

Why 1022?

Many teachers and students asked me why 1022 is my favourite magical number? In Physics many concepts are symmetrical. When an electron encounter a positron(the anti-particle for electron) a magnificent reaction called "Pair Annihilation" will occured with a production of 2 photons travelling in opposite directions. The energy of the 2 photons is 1.022 MeV! On the other hand, if a beam of 1.022 MeV radiation strike on a metal, a pair of electron-positron will be created! You may use the famous Einstein formula E=mc^2 to verify this. This reaction obeys the Principle of Conservation of momentum also! Both my house and car registration numbers are 1022!

Jangan Menyusahkan Orang Lain

How to manage a big school effectively? TEAMWORK is the answer! Together Everyone Achieve More. Each and everyone of us must carry out our own duties and most importantly don't disturb (MENYUSAHKAN) others! As the number of deaths from Infuenza A (H1N1) hit 12 and the number of infections continued to climb, ALL of us must adhere to STRICT PERSONAL HYGIENE and COUGH ETIQUETTE. We must maintain cleanliness in our School Compound. WHO declared 'Phase 6' meaning a global pendemic-there is no longer a way to STOP the spreading of H1N1 Virus! We must take care and increase our own personal body resistance againts the attack by H1N1 Virus.

Leadership, Management, Administration (LMA)

Attending 1st day Cluster School Course at IAB Genting, meeting up with old and new friends! Our Course Consultants Mr Jeremy and Mr Marcus shared with us their insights and vast experiences on Centralized and Decentralized School Management Systems. Very Exciting, Challenging and Fun way of learning indeed! We walked through the LMA concepts in details: Leadership-Bringing School running somewhere; Management-Keeping school running whereas Administration-To oil the machinery of school management. Leadership is NOT STATUS but RESOURCE. One single non-negotiable factor as leaders is the OPPORTUNITY to lead!

Specific Formats and Answering Techniques

On 2nd Oct (Friday) morning, I conducted another 2 hours Physics Lessons at DAGANG Hall. This time we stressed on Paper 2 and paper 3: Conceptualization, Decision Making, Problem Solving (Qualitative and Quantitative) as well as Designing Experiments! Most importantly we hope the students remember and practise the specific Formats used in presenting answers! I wish to spend more time and showing more examples to students! I have briefed ALL Physics Teachers in DAGANG and they are more than willing to further coach and guide the students, so please don’t ever hesitate to consult our DAGANG Teachers!

3T3L and Tips

On 30th Sept (Wednesday) afternoon, I conducted 2 hours Physics Lesson to Form5 Technical Students. I introduced 3T3L effective revision techniques and also 10 points Tips. Responses from students are very positive even though the DAGANG Hall was very warm and cramped for nearly 400 students. I am sure the students will find Physics Learning is exciting, is challenging and of course is FUN! Let’s strive for A+ in SPM 2009 especially for Physics 4531!

Another Surprise Visit....

Last night I received another surprise invitation for dinner with an old friend Prof Dr Shaun Zeng, who graduated from Oxford University UK in the field of Psychology and Computer Science. Dr Shaun is also a member of the American Psychological Association and a professional member of the American Counselling Association. After dinner we walked round the school and hostels areas. Many positive inputs by Dr Shaun to DAGANG! I enjoyed the precious time and valuable suggestions by Dr Shaun. We’re looking forward to another visit or professional collaboration with Dr Shaun in the near future!

A Surprise Visit

Last week I received a special phone call by a very special person-My High School Teacher-Mr Bong. He would like me to pick him up at Larkin Station at 7.30am and pay a surprise visit to DAGANG! A big surprise indeed! Mr Bong my Chemistry Teacher, reaching 70 years and still very strong! First question was: Why I look so old? Not healthy? Any sickness? Tears dropped! I lost 8 kg at Klawang in the past 5 years as Pengetua and further slimmed down another 3 kg at DAGANG in merely 2.5 months! Well my dear boys and girls, please use your calculator to estimate how much energy involved by using famous Einstein equation again; E=mc^2?

Why Study Physics?

Two simple reasons:

1. Physics is one of the most fundamental of the sciences. Every discipline of sciences uses the ideas, principles and laws of physics. No one can design any kind of practical devices or gadgets without first grapping to understand the basic principles of physics.

2. Studying Physics is fun, is challenging, is adventurous and of course richly rewarding! (RM 500/= 1A Physics SPM 2009). We consider success in Physics as a towering achievement of human intellect! Hence as the festive mood of Aidilfitri approaching, please try to relate “Pelita, Kuih Raya, Baju Kurung, Kepaya…” or even phenomana along “Balik Kampung” with laws and principles of Physics!

SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI; MAAF ZAHIR & BATIN

LED Light Bulbs & OLED Panels

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) light bulbs are getting popular with their minuscule energy consumption (less heat dissipation) and 20-year life expectancy! However the new generations of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) create uniform, diffuse light across ultra-thin sheets of flexible materials! Do you know that the new Display Panels for computers can be rolled in and out of the barrel of a pen! Currently OLED is one of the top research priorities that almost absorbed half of the research and development budget!

Inverter Air-Conc

To improve the efficiency of T&L in Physics for High School students, we can always refer to the lattest development of Technology. One very interesting example is how does the Inverter Air-Conc help to save electricity bills?

The inverter tag found on some air conditioners signifies the ability of the unit to continuously regulate its thermal power flow by altering the speed of the compressor in response to cooling demand.

Traditional reverse-cycle air-conditioners use a heat pump that is either working at maximum capability or switched off, as the compressor's speed cannot be varied. In order to regulate temperature a thermistor is used to measure the ambient air temperature and switch the compressor on when the ambient air temperature is too far from the desired temperature.

Air-conditioners bearing the inverter tag use a variable-frequency drive to control the speed of the motor and thus the compressor. The variable-frequency drive uses a rectifier to convert the incoming AC current to DC and then uses pulse-width modulation of the DC current within an inverter to produce AC current of a desired frequency. The AC current is used to drive a brushless motor or an induction motor. As the speed of a brushless motor is synchronised to the frequency of the AC current, it is thus possible to build a compressor that can be run at different speeds. Similarly, the voltage and frequency can be varied as needed to efficiently run an induction motor at different speeds. A microcontroller can then sample the current ambient air temperature and adjust the speed of the compressor appropriately.

Eliminating stop-start cycles increases efficiency, extends the life of components, and helps eliminate sharp fluctuations in the load the air-conditioner places on the power supply. Ultimately this makes inverter air conditioners less prone to break downs, cheaper to run and the outdoor compressor is generally quieter than a standard air conditioning unit's compressor.

(Adapted from Wikipedia)

Can you think of other innovation of technology or processes that can improve Energy Saving in our School?

Pantun Perayaan Aidilfitri for Physics Gang

As the mood of Raya Aidilfitri getting hotter, I wish to contribute 3 pantuns for my Dear Friends in Physics and family: Bada, Ana, Rahim, Zainal, Joned, Yati, Azizul, Amelia, Lina, Noorliati, Fathira, Halimah, Helmy, Maznah, Norliza, Haffizam, Wan Aimran, Prof Roslan, Prof Razak and many-many others:

1 Syawal

Cyber Space

We are living in borderless cyber space. Information transmitted at consistently increased speed. We need to stay connected even at critical time of crisis like the outbreak Influenza A (H1N1). However there are many new threats we are facing:

1. Pornography-more and more naughty websites linked and attached even to the Educational Websites...

2. Cyber Bullying-Kids and students may easily fall into the traps, they'll lose confidence in life....

3. Cyber game addiction-precious time, money and energy wasted. Students cannot catch up in studies, home-works and essential revision practices neglected..

4. Racist and extremely prejudice articles and information highly detrimental to our multi-racial society...

Hence we always advise our students to explore the cyber space very carefully and never hesitate to consult teachers or parents. Selamat Berpuasa and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri soon. Maaf Zahir dan Batin.

REACT Strategies

CORD (1999) proposed 5 processes for effective learning with UNDERSTANDING (Oppose to ROTE MEMORIZATION):

1. RELATING-Learning in the context of life experiences. The process of relating abstract concepts to familiar ideas and situations.(Please refer to examples of Butterflies and CDs in my previous article)

2.EXPERIENCING-Learning in the context of exploration, discovery and invention.(Extremely critical for Technical Education!)

3. APPLYING-Applying concepts and information in useful contexts-Real woarld applications or work-based experiences provides evidents for usefulness of abstract concepts.

4.COOPERATING-The brain is social.Learning occurs at much higher cognitive levels when learners interact!

5. TRANSFERRING-Learners able to process new information when they engage in transferring what they already know to unfamiliar situations!

Teachers please discuss these strategies at KMK meetings.
